When Embrilliance Thumbnailer stops showing design pictures, the cause is usually a File Explorer view set to icons instead of thumbnails, or another program that has taken over the embroidery file types. On Windows, the fix Embrilliance recommends is to install the current version, restart, then run Reset Links from the Thumbnailer Control Panel. On a Mac, check that the Thumbnailer extension is enabled and that Embrilliance has the file access it needs.

What Thumbnailer does (and does not do)

Embrilliance Thumbnailer replaces the plain icons on your embroidery files with pictures of the designs, inside Windows File Explorer or the Mac Finder. Embrilliance describes it as “more like an upgrade” for those file windows than a program you use.

A few points that trip people up:

  • It is not free. Thumbnailer is a paid Embrilliance product and needs a serial number. The free Embrilliance download is Express mode of the main Platform, which is a different program. Its regular price in the Embrilliance store was $44.95 in October 2026.
  • It is a separate installer. Embrilliance says Thumbnailer does not install in the Embrilliance Platform. You download its own installer from the Downloads page.
  • It cannot open designs. Embrilliance says you should never set your file types to open in Thumbnailer, because it has no ability to open files. If you set a .pes file to “open with” Thumbnailer, double-clicking will do nothing useful.
  • One license covers your computers. Embrilliance allows Thumbnailer on as many computers as you personally own, on both Mac and Windows.

Current versions and what they run on

Per the Embrilliance Downloads page in October 2026:

Your computerThumbnailer version
Windows 7, 10, 11 (32-bit, 64-bit or ARM)3.11
Windows on ARM (separate build)3.11 ARM
Windows XP (final version)3.10XP
Current macOS3.12
macOS Catalina era3.11
OS X Mojave and earlier2.99

The Windows manual lists support for embroidery formats including ART, DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, PES, SEW, VIP, VP3 and XXX, plus some quilting and cutter formats such as SVG and Studio. On macOS, Embrilliance says Apple changes mean .EXP files cannot be shown as thumbnails. Every other format and platform is unaffected. So if only your .EXP files are blank on a Mac, nothing is broken.

How to install it correctly

Windows

  1. Download the current installer from embrilliance.com/downloads. There is a .zip and an .exe version; Embrilliance says the result is the same, and the .zip exists in case antivirus software objects.
  2. Install from an account with administrator privileges. Accept the security and User Account Control prompts.
  3. Keep the default install location. The manual warns that changing it can affect how the program works.
  4. When the Control Panel opens, enter your serial number.
  5. Click Select All so every format gets a picture, then click OK!
  6. Restart the computer.

Mac

  1. Download the .pkg for your macOS version and run it. Thumbnailer installs in your Applications folder.
  2. Open Embrilliance Thumbnailer from Applications, enter your serial number and click OK.
  3. Leave all formats checked and click Done.

The current Mac version uses an Apple extension for file previews. Embrilliance says if you have trouble, check your system settings to make sure the extension is added and enabled.

Fix 1: Set File Explorer to show thumbnails

Thumbnailer only makes the pictures. Windows decides whether to show them. If your folder is set to List or Details, or Windows is told to always show icons, you will see plain icons no matter what.

  1. Open the folder that holds your designs. Make sure the designs are unzipped, unless you turned on ZIP support (see Fix 4).
  2. On the View menu, choose Medium icons or larger. Microsoft’s own OneDrive help also says to use medium-sized icons or larger for thumbnails.
  3. Open Folder Options (in Windows 10, View tab, then Options, then Change folder and search options).
  4. On the View tab, uncheck Always show icons, never thumbnails, then click OK.

While you are there, the Embrilliance manual suggests unchecking Hide extensions for known file types, because two designs can look identical as thumbnails but be different formats.

Embrilliance says other software you install, and Windows updates, can change the registry entries that let Windows pass your designs to Thumbnailer. Reset Links repairs them. Embrilliance’s support article gives these steps:

  1. Make sure the current Thumbnailer is installed and that you have restarted since installing it.
  2. Open the Thumbnailer Control Panel from the desktop shortcut named Thumbnailer.
  3. Click Reset Links.
  4. In the Reset Links panel, click Select All.
  5. Check Clear double click program settings.
  6. Check Files inside .ZIPS.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Back in the Control Panel, click Select All, then OK.

The manual adds one caution: after running Reset Links, always confirm the Control Panel still has every option you want selected. It also notes the Diagnostic and Logging buttons are only for when Embrilliance support asks for them.

Fix 3: Reset what double-click opens

Installing embroidery software often changes which program opens a file type. That can also stop thumbnails. The Clear double click program settings box in Reset Links undoes this. Afterward, set your own program again:

  1. Right-click a design of that format (for example a .jef file) and choose Properties.
  2. Next to “Opens with”, click Change.
  3. Pick your embroidery software, or use Browse to find it. Do not pick Thumbnailer.
  4. Repeat for each format you want to double-click open.

Fix 4: Designs inside ZIP files

Thumbnailer can show designs inside ZIP files if you check Files inside ZIPs in the Control Panel. The manual notes that programs like WinZip can leave registry settings that stop this from working. If ZIP previews fail, unzip the designs into a normal folder.

Fix 5: Designs stored in OneDrive

If your design folder lives in OneDrive, files can be “online-only,” meaning they are not actually on your computer until opened. Microsoft’s fix for missing thumbnails in OneDrive is to set the view to medium icons or larger, and if pictures still do not appear, right-click the file or folder and choose Always keep on this device. That downloads the files so Windows (and Thumbnailer) can read them.

Fix 6: Clear the Windows thumbnail cache

Windows stores thumbnails in a cache that can become corrupted. Windows Disk Cleanup includes a Thumbnails entry you can delete; it is only a cache, and Windows rebuilds the pictures as you browse. Run this after Reset Links if a few designs still show old or blank pictures.

Fix 7: Mac thumbnails missing

  • Grant access. Since Catalina, macOS requires you to allow programs to reach your files. Embrilliance’s steps: open the Apple menu, go to System Preferences (System Settings on newer macOS), then Security & Privacy, then Full Disk Access. Unlock it, click +, and add each Embrilliance title.
  • Give it time and restart. Embrilliance says that with many designs you may need to leave the Mac on overnight so it can build all the previews, then shut down and restart. It also says you may need to reboot more than once.
  • Use the right view. The Embrilliance Mac guide shows thumbnails in Finder’s Icon, List and Column views. Select a design and press the Quick Look button for a large preview.

Frequently asked questions

Is Embrilliance Thumbnailer free? No. It needs a serial number and is sold separately in the Embrilliance store. Updates are free for owners, according to the Windows manual.

Why can’t I open a design in Thumbnailer? It is not designed to open files. To open, resize or add lettering, you need embroidery software such as Embrilliance Essentials.

Thumbnails stopped after I installed other embroidery software. Why? That software probably claimed the file types. Run Reset Links with “Clear double click program settings” checked, then reassign your double-click program.

How do I check my Thumbnailer version? Open the Thumbnailer Control Panel and click About. It shows your version and serial number. Check for updates is in the same window.

Do I need to keep the Control Panel open? No. Once you click OK, Thumbnailer works in the background. You only reopen it to change formats, update or reset links.
